What to do in a Motor Vehicle Accident

What to do if you are involved in a Motor Vehicle Accident

You might consider yourself the best driver in the world, but accidents do happen. You need to know the necessary precautions to take should this ever happen to you, whether it is serious accident or a small bumper-to-bumper, they are both very serious and need to be considered.

If you find yourself in a bumper-to-bumper accident follow these steps of what to do:

Step 1: Immediately stop your vehicle and put on your hazards.

Step 2: Check if all the persons involved in the accident are ok.

Step 3: If anyone is injured, do not attempt to remove them from the vehicle. Instead, contact an emergency service to assist the injured person.

Step 4: If no one is injured, move your vehicle so it is out of the way for the rest of the traffic to pass by.

Step 5: Inspect both vehicles for damage caused by the accident. If you have a camera phone, take pictures of the damage as proof.

Step 6: It is important to get as much information from the parties involved in the accident.

  • Full names (Name & Surname)
  • ID number (If the person is from another country, they will need to provide their passport numbers)
  • Car registration number
  • Address
  • Cell phone number
  • Insurance company details
  • Make, model and colour of vehicles
  • The date and time of the accident
  • Details of any eye witnesses

Step 7: Both drivers involved in the accident need to visit their nearest police station within 24 hours to get a case number. Here you will be asked to discuss in detail how the accident took place and the necessary details of the persons involved.
