There are a few things as fun as hitting the open road with your best friends in the world, spending hours together bonding as you make your way down to your holiday destination. Fast-forward a few years and taking that trip with kids in tow could be the stuff of nightmares.
Young children usually have set routines when at home and disrupting that routine with long stretches in the confines of a car could leave you with cranky, sulky and bored. This doesn’t have to be the case though. By following a few tips, you could have a pleasant family road trip without tranquilising your little ones.
For starters, it’s a good idea to stop every so often. You don’t have to stop over for long periods; a quick bathroom trip will be sufficient. This will keep those tiny bladders empty and help in some way to combat boredom. It’s also a good time for mom and dad to breathe and stretch their legs.
What you pack is an important part of the road trip success. Games and snacks are must-haves. You could try packing a baking tray with magnetic puzzles that they can play with on their laps without getting puzzle pieces all over the car and avoid nagging children. Sticker and colouring books will also work for this purpose.
Want to keep your kids entertained? In-car DVDs and children songs on the radio are also great. You can get relatively inexpensive portable DVD players these days, but you could also just upload a few kids’ movies onto your tablet for their entertainment.
At the end of the day, keeping your little bundles of joy occupied and happy during a road trip won’t only result in their enjoyment of this experience, but will make it a pleasure for you as well.
