Keep Your Car Winter-Ready

South African winters may be milder than in other parts of the world, but colder temperatures, morning frost, mist, and slippery roads can still affect your vehicle’s performance and safety. Giving your car a little extra care during the winter months can help you avoid unnecessary breakdowns and keep you safe on the road.

Whether you’re travelling daily and/or planning a long-distance trip, these easy checks and maintenance tips will help you keep your car running smoothly, safely, and reliably all winter long.

Essential Winter Car Care Tips

  1. Check Your Battery

Cold weather affects battery performance. Have your battery tested, and make sure the terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

  • Top Up Antifreeze / Coolant

Your engine needs protection from the cold. Ensure your coolant mixture is correct (usually a 50/50 coolant and distilled water ratio is suggested) to prevent freezing and overheating and to lubricate the water system of your engine.

  • Inspect Wipers and Washer Fluid

Winter rain and frost can reduce visibility. Replace old wiper blades and fill up with winter-grade washer fluid.

  • Keep Tyres in Check

Tyres lose pressure in cold weather. Check tread depth and pressure weekly to maintain grip on wet, slippery roads.

  • Lights and Indicators

Shorter days mean more driving in the dark. Check all exterior lights and replace any burnt out bulbs.

  • Maintain Oil Levels

Use oil suited to colder temperatures, and what your vehicle manufacturer suggests you must use in South Africa, especially if you’re in a chilly region. Check levels regularly and top up where needed.

  • Protect Your Windscreen

Use a windscreen cover if parking outside overnight. Never pour water on an icy windscreen as this can cause it to crack.

  • Watch for Rust

Salt and moisture can lead to rust. Rinse your car regularly, especially under the wheel arches and chassis.

  • Keep an Emergency Kit

Stock your boot with essentials like a torch, jumper cables, gloves, blanket, first-aid kit, and reflective triangle.

  1. Don’t Forget Regular Services

A winter health check at your nearest RMI accredited workshop can help identify potential issues before they become costly problems.
